Early Ed and Somerville Child Care students go trick or treating!
by Early Ed students, '25 & '26
On Halloween, the juniors and seniors of the Early Education program went trick-or-treating with the students from the Somerville Child Care Center, which is housed within the high school.
All 18 Somerville Child Care Center students dressed up. Their creative costumes consisted of construction workers, different animals, skeletons, fictional characters and more!
The kids were able to express their excitement as they received their candy and saw the costumes of the older students around the school. This also helped the children's social skills as many were shy and new to this tradition.
While many teachers and kids passed out candy to the students, history and English classes were the main stops as some of the children have parents in those departments.
The Early Ed juniors and seniors escorted the children to the different classrooms. Everyone was ecstatic and the children were beyond excited.
They want everyone to know: "We are all grateful for this opportunity and to everyone who participated!"
SHS spirit week
Nimra Sheikh, '26
Spirit week, sponsored by the senior class, spanned from October 15th to October 18th; on Monday, the 14th, there was no school because of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The week included four themes: BBQ dad vs. soccer mom, dress as your type, teacher-student outfit swap, and 90’s/Y2K fashion day.
The purpose of spirit week is to showcase community spirit and create an active space for students to engage with each other and even their teachers. The week ended with homecoming, a dance all Somerville High students could attend. It was another way to build community and bring people together.
The least popular theme seemed to be teacher-student outfit swap. However, many students dressed up for 90’s/Y2K fashion day. There were a couple repeat themes from the previous two years, such as BBQ dad V.S. soccer mom and dress as your type. Regardless, some students participated.
Spirit week ties the students together in Highlander spirit, so thank you to the senior class for sponsoring it. There will certainly be more spirit weeks to look out for in the coming months. Students who did not participate or did not know about Homecoming Spirit Week will get plenty more opportunities to do so!
